Only a few years after Wind in the Sage's retirement, our first truly big sire came along in the form of a towering gray colt named Gibraltar. Retired early due to injury, Gibraltar sired 40 stakes winners of over $36 million and 33 stakes producers, including our own $3.7 million earner Imperative. His bloodline can still be found at the top levels of the turf routing world over 4 decades later. Just on the heels of Gibraltar was a little, dark colt named Through the Ghost. A two-time champion on the track with a Steward's Cup Juvenile victory and over $5 million in earnings, he sired the winners of over $20 million, including our Steward's Cup Classic winning $5.9 million horse Castles Crumble and $4 million producer Stars Will Dance. Castles Crumble, himself, also stood at stud for us, crossing the $21 million mark in progeny earnings and accomplishing the feat of siring his own Classic winning $5 million son in Can't Take the Sky. The remarkable feat continued, when champion Can't Take the Sky's son, Browncoat, won his own Steward's Cup, taking the Marathon exactly 25 years after his great grandsire's Juvenile victory. | |
| Still the benchmark of all stallions to walk these halls, however, is Through the Ghost's nephew, War Like Me. The statuesque bay stallion won 17 of 22 starts, over $3 million and stamped his mark on the dirt routing division for many years to come. As of this writing, his foals have amassed nearly $115 million in earnings, with 131 individual stakes winners and 53 stakes producers. Among them are 11 multimillionaires and winners of every Triple Crown race, including our own Louisville Derby and Desert World Cup winner, Comeback Kid. He has 16 sons at stud, with at least another three likely to join them, to carry on a legacy for the ages.
